MAKING THE INSTALLATION

DAY 1, 090403
On this up to now warmest day of spring, we went to buy 3 cones at ELAK, a roll of copper wire, and a switchable power adapter. At Vossenmarkt we got 5 old and broken speakers, which Sam dismantled on arrival back at okno. We looked at a possible spot in the garden, which has still more the character of a moonscape.

DAY 2, 090404

Sam Ashley presents: Life is Short and Getting Shorter All the Time...

Date:
Wednesday, 8 April, 2009 - 19:00

PRESENTATION ON TUESDAY APRIL 8TH AT 7PM.
WITH A SPECIAL DRINK FOR SPRING AND TO CELEBRATE OUR GARDEN.

This is our first outdoor installation in the rooftop garden. Sam Ashley is currently working at OKNO to bring a version of his work "Life is Short and Getting Shorter All the Time". It is based on very basic principles of sound synthesis with vintage speakers, steel wires and low currents.

Life is Short and Getting Shorter All the Time

1.

This collection of devices was created especially for the current okno space. Together the instruments can be thought of as an installation, except that in this case "installation" doesn't mean something that exists there on its own, generating sound. Instead the idea is that a visitor to okno can use the devices to generate an individual version of the piece, a concert for one person at a time. When the instruments are positioned on a table or other surface within easy reach of one person, they just fill the space around that person's ears with noise.
